What is NOT a Commercial Patio Heater?

What is a Commercial Patio Heater? That’s tough to answer because the definition of “commercial patio heaters” has been diluted by the many manufacturers and web sales sites who claim they are providing commercial products. Here, a “commercial” patio heater creates a lot of carbon monoxide and little heat. . Snapped close by in the same mall on the same evening, this third “commercial” patio-heater image shows just how flimsy a so-called commercial heater can be, and it is also flaring out polluting yellow flames. Even a commercial product that is poorly maintained could create soot. But if a product has a tendency towards poor performance then I question the quality of the product's design. In this mall I saw two heaters of one specific "commercial" brand and I have included pictures of them both. When you are purchasing gas patio heaters, suffice to say that if the heater is $329, or doesn’t have a brand name, it is certainly a looooong stretch to call it commercial quality. At Alfresco Heating, we carefully review and select our products before we sell them. The only portable propane patio heaters that we have tested and deem to be of commercial quality are SunGlo and Kindle Living. If you manufacture a commercial product and you would like us to test it, or if you simply want some good advice, then please contact us.

Compare Features of Overhead Gas Patio Heaters

When choosing permanent over-head radiant gas patio heaters, I generally encourage a phone conversation, because there are too many variables to cover in a short description or blog post. Call 888-927-6456 (888-warm-glo).

General hints:

Infrared Dynamics SunPak is the original. (Models S25 and S34) Any and all others are imitations. The SunPak can be mounted in unsheltered areas. The S25 has the lowest combustible mounting clearances of any gas patio heater I know of. It is reasonably quiet. It is reasonably reliable. It requires external 24 volt wiring. Black or stainless steel finish optional. Natural gas or propane optional. Excellent customer service and support. Made in California.

Twin Eagles TEGH48 is also a good product. It has the advantage of a low and high setting. It must be somewhat sheltered. It requires significant combustible mounting clearance above and behind. It is reasonably quiet. It is reasonably reliable. It requires no external wiring, but batteries must be periodically replaced. It has a remote control for operation. Stainless-Steel finish only. Natural gas or propane optional. Excellent customer service and support. Made in California.

DCS by Fisher and Paykel's DRH48N (also called Del Rey) is very hot. In my opinion the lowest part of the DRH48N should always be mounted above 9 feet high. It can be mounted in unsheltered areas. It requires the most clearance from combustibles of all similar heaters. The powerful burner is a bit louder than the SunPak and Twin Eagles. It requires external 24 volt wiring. Stainless-Steel finish only. Natural gas only. Made in Mexico.

Kindle Living has brought art to patio heaters, in a manner previously unknown in the outdoor heating world. Kindle patio heaters look like giant, eight-foot-tall, table lamps. Many of their models are illuminated. Inside a Kindle’s attractive shell is a high-quality heater made by Infrared Dynamics, or a Patio Comfort. Their art-piece heaters are made for propane and for natural gas. Kindle prices begin at $1,885.
Permanent Wall / Ceiling Mounted Gas Patio Heaters

The most preferred type of permanent patio heaters are wall or ceiling mounted gas infrared heaters. The state-of-the-art SunPak outdoor heaters are installed up and out of the way, and light with a flick of a switch. The infrared burner tiles glow orange ten minutes after igniting the heater, projecting efficient warmth. SunPak heaters are American made by Infrared Dynamics. Beware that some overhead gas heaters are designed for warehouse use, and will not endure an outdoor installation. The outdoor-rated SunPak heaters are slick looking at 8” x 8” x 48”. One will heat an area approximately 8’ to 12’ square, depending on the model, orientation of the heater, and ambient conditions. A flammable ceiling must be at least 9’ high to even consider using an overhead gas patio heater under it. A 10½’ (or higher) ceiling will give you maximum versatility of model and ability to tilt the heater. Currently the only overhead gas heater with a low setting is the Twin Eagles, which is also American made. Infrared Dynamics is working on a dual heat SunPak patio heater. I anticipate that it will be on the market in 2012. The disadvantage of permanent gas overhead patio heaters is the purchase price. Overhead natural gas patio heaters are convenient and inexpensive to operate.
